Spain and Germany both picked up three points in Saturday evening’s UEFA Nations League action, with the two giants dispatching of Switzerland and Ukraine respectively.

Luis Enrique’s men continued their impressive form in League A Group 4 on Saturday night, picking up a solid 1-0 victory over Switzerland to consolidate their place at the top of the table. La Furia Roja dominated the match from the off, controlling possession and creating the better chances.

The visitors almost took the lead early on however, when the ball found its way to full-back Loris Benito waiting at the far post, but David de Gea pulled off a superb stop, diving low to his right and parrying the ball with a strong hand.

Spain broke the deadlock soon after, when a poor pass from goalkeeper Yann Sommer evaded the slipping Granit Xhaka, and Mikel Oyarzabal was on hand to drill home and punish his opponents clinically.

The hosts continued to threaten on the break, and missed a string of great chances, as Switzerland began to panic in possession. Despite both sides having opportunities late in the game, neither could find the net, and Spain edged to a valuable win.

Elsewhere, Germany collected their first ever Nations League victory, defeating a depleted Ukraine by two goals to one. Matthias Ginter gave Joachim Low’s men the lead after 20 minutes, tapping home from close range following some great wing play by Antonio Rudiger.

The points were essentially wrapped up early in the second half, when the Ukraine goalkeeper produced an absolute clanger, dropping a cross directly onto the head of Leon Goretzka, who inadvertently diverted the ball over the line.

The result was put into question on 77 minutes, when Ruslan Malinovsky converted a penalty to give the hosts some hope, but Germany held on to claim all three points, for the very first time in Nations League history.
