Pep Guardiola
Guardiola say his depleted side beat Arsenal 1-0 | Alex Livesey/Getty Images

Pep Guardiola has provided injury updates on a trio of players after seeing his depleted Manchester City side overcome Arsenal in Saturday’s Premier League encounter.

The Citizens were already feelings effects of a bloated injury list, but were hit with further concerns before kick-off as Aymeric Laporte and Benjamin Mendy were revealed to be set for spells on the sidelines.

With the French duo unavailable, Ruben Dias was handed his home debut in central defence, while Joao Cancelo filled in at left-back. Both put in solid shifts and Raheem Sterling’s first half goal was enough to separate the sides, ending a run of two Premier League matches without a win for the hosts.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola offered updates on the missing duo, while also stating that Gabriel Jesus will be forced to wait longer for his own comeback.

“Mendy will be three or four weeks,” Guardiola said, via Manchester Evening News. “Laporte we expect back sooner. I don’t know how long. Maybe one week to 10 days.

“Gabriel has a quad injury in front of his leg and I think we will have to be calm and cautious. He is still not on the field training. We struggled a lot in the beginning, for the lack of preparation and amount of absences but even with that we are still alive.

Sergio Aguero

“We are not able to play 90 minutes in a high consistency but I have very good news in terms of Bernardo [Silva] coming back, Phil [Foden] playing good, Riyad [Mahrez] was outstanding today, Rodri maintained an incredible level from the beginning so we are satisfied so far with the situation we have.”

Another positive note for City was the return of Sergio Aguero, who was deemed fit to start against the Gunners despite having not played since needing knee surgery back in June.

“We are incredibly happy he [Aguero] is back, for him and for us,” Guardiola added. “It was four months. He is still away from his [best] condition, but he got 60 minutes. On Wednesday we have another game. It is important to have him. We need his goals.”
