Alexander Zverev won the 2020 ATP Cologne by easing past Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final. This marks the fifth consecutive year where the German has ended with at least one title to his name. Zverev has added a feather to his cap this year by becoming the youngest man since Novak Djokovic (2010) to reach the final of a Major championship at the 2020 US Open.

Zverev had a difficult outing at Roland Garros last month, as he struggled with his endurance. The conditions made it worse, and the German was sent packing in the fourth round. However, right after the disappointment in  Paris, Zverev cruised past everyone at the bett1HULKS Indoors.

After getting past two Spaniards and a South African, Zverev set up a final clash with Canadian sensation Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 23-year-old had no trouble putting off his younger opponent and won the match in straight sets (6-3, 6-3).

“I had a very tough final in New York and the next final I played here I wanted to come out and obviously play my best tennis, finish the match,” Zverev reacted to the win. Zverev will be on cloud nine, but Felix Auger-Aliassime, not so much.

The young Canadian is only 20-years-old, but he already has six ATP final appearances under his belt. However, his current record is 0-6 when it comes to these matches. It is incredible that Auger-Aliassime has reached six finals so quickly in his career, but the youngster is yet to win a title.

Alexander Zverev has a message for his German fans

Alexander Zverev dominated right from the start to overcome his less experienced opponent. This marked the German’s 12th career title and the first this year. Moreover, this is Zverev’s first title in Cologne, and he was a bit disappointed that the local fans were not there to cheer him on.

Of course, the tournament had to carry on without fans in attendance, owing to the severity of the pandemic. But the virtual support will always remain, and Zverev hopes that people tuned in to watch their hometown hero triumph in Cologne.

“Sporting-wise I felt kind of a support although there couldn’t be fans here. I hope that a lot watched it on TV today. I also think many watched USO-final. But above that I don’t want and know what to say. You guys have to write about me,” Zverev said in his press conference.

With this win, Zverev currently holds a record of 10-1 in his recent hard court matches. The German looks in good touch currently and would look to seal one more title to his name before the 2020 ATP calendar wraps up.
